The global market for Postal Automation System is projected to reach US$1.0 billion by 2025, driven by theincreasingly stringent privacy regulations legislated and adopted for emails and the ensuing resurgence of interest in snail mails for marketing and promotions. Also automation is seen as the first step forward in resurrecting lost confidence in postal services given its long standing reliability issues. Approximately, 18 trillion emails are sent each year worldwide as compared to the 500 billion snail mails. Global postal operators combating this challenge of digital alternatives by investing in efficiency enhancing technologies like postal automation systems. The investments come at a time when emails are beginning to feel the heat of stringent privacy regulations i.e. EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Postal automation systems are smart solutions for efficient, faster and reliable parcel sorting and delivery of mails and packages to recipients. Encompassing mail & parcel sorting systems, automatic coding & reading systems and postal software, these systems simplify the entire mail processing chain, from pre-sorting through to sequencing. The technology reduces manual sorting and associated costs and errors to expedite delivery, save on labor costs and improve overall productivity. These systems hold various merits over conventional postal systems that are associated with human errors and the need for higher manpower and processing time. The prominent factors that favorably influence the market include rising need for automated systems, rapid urbanization and digitalization across developing countries, increasing labor costs, and substantial expansion of the e-commerce industry. Increasing labor expenses are driving postal operators to embrace postal automation systems designed to reduce manual tasks along with sorting and handling errors to improve delivery and customer service. These systems help operators in gaining an edge over their competitors through cost savings, timely delivery and enhanced productivity. Growing eCommerce industry also presents opportunity for post offices to expand into logistics services. In 2020, the e-commerce industry was estimated to handle about 2 billion digital buyers and account for around 15% share of global retail sales. The increasing use of the channel for shopping has also pushed up the number of parcels and packages that need to be handled and delivered reliably. The trend has played a vital role in bolstering the adoption of postal automation systems. On the flip side, high capital investment and the shrinking letter market continue to limit overall expansion of the postal automation system market. One of the major challenges for market participants is to design advanced systems in the era of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). In addition, technical issues associated with these systems may hamper whole operations. Technical issues associated with sensing elements in these systems could halt the operation, while software issues may affect the functioning and delay the sorting process. These concerns require companies to come up with more efficient systems capable of living up to postal operators` expectations and help them deliver faster, reliable services.
