HIGHLIGHTS
The global market for Plant Phenotyping is expected to reach US$262.7million by the year 2027, trailing a post COVID-19 CAGR of 10.7% over the analysis period 2020 to 2027. sAgriculture, being one of the most important sectors of a nation's economy, requires the right natural resource management to preserve and facilitate optimum utilization of resources. Better technologies, precision agriculture are emerging as the major trends in the direction of achieving food security for future and ensure equitable distribution. The global population has increased multi-folds from around 1.8 billion in 1915 to 6.2 billion in 2000 and to 7.8 billion people at present. World population expected to reach 9.9 billion by 2050, with developing economies recording the most increase in population numbers. This along with rapidly rising incomes of people in developing economies, and the subsequent increase in consumption of high-protein foods is contributing to the rapid increase in demand food. Growing global demand for food underlines the need for enhancing nutrition and output to meet demand of rising population. In the coming years, countries with large population base, such as India, will have to rely on imports of large amounts of grains to feed their expanding population. The agro production practices and systems of developing countries are not proficient enough to address the growing demands. The rapidly growing demand for food and the need to address the nutritional needs of undernourished population are expected to transform the agricultural industry. Farmers are increasingly coming under pressure to raise overall crop production either by enhancing productivity of existing land through use of fertilizers and new irrigation approaches or by adding new agricultural land. Though clearing land for agricultural operations does provide a means to increase crop output, there are significant social and ecological implications associated with the same. Also, the rate of increase in crop yield is far too slow to be able to meet the expected rise in demand for food.
Added to this climate change has & will continue to reduce crop productivity. Studies reveal that rising temperature have already impacted yields of four major crops at the global scale. To ensure food security for the growing world population, crop& region specific adaptation strategies are important. Crop phonemics is rising in popularity with high-throughput plant phenotyping (HTPP) helping to monitor performance of improved genotypes. Improved genotypes offer enhanced traits for environmental stress tolerance in the regions most vulnerable to climate change and to desertification processes. Plant Phenotyping is the game changer in promoting the next green revolution in crop breeding. Plant phenotyping provides insights into plant attributes for producing crops with enhanced yields and sustainability factor. The discipline represents an evolving scientific approach that combines plant agronomy and genomics. Plant phenotyping involves the assessment of plant traits such as growth, tolerance, development, resistance, physiology, ecology, yield, and measurement of individual quantitative parameters that form the basis for trait assessment. Researchers, developers and plant breeders exploit quantitative information on phenotypes to understand gene functions and detect quantitative trait locus. The data also provides insights into the influence of pests and pathogens on phenotypes along with the response of plants to light, carbon dioxide and limitations related to water and nutrients. While plant phenotyping is in the nascent phase, ongoing research to identify high-yield varieties without using genetically modified or GM technology is expected to significantly benefit the market. The demand for plant phenotyping is also attributed to rising focus on identifying novel plant traits for expediting developments in the field of plant breeding.
The global market for plant phenotyping is anticipated to register strong growth in the coming years on account of increasing adoption and ongoing technological advances. Plant phenotyping is finding increasing acceptance for quantitative assessment of physiological, anatomical, biochemical and ontogenetical properties of plants. The market is driven by increasing population and the need for food security through high-yield crops. Other factors driving growth include strong focus on sustainable crop production and rising investments to boost crop yields, mainly in developed countries. While adoption of precision irrigation is expected to bolster market growth, continuing R&D activity and availability of remote sensing solutions are anticipated to present new growth opportunities to players. The plant phenotyping market is likely to receive a strong impetus from increasing use of drones for phenotyping, especially in countries with manpower shortage and ease of data procurement. Further advancements in plant phenotyping are anticipated to improve selection of breeding efforts, automated plant health monitoring, expedite genetic gains and minimize quantitative and qualitative losses for crop production. In addition, these solutions need to be cost-efficient for extensive adoption. The development of superior crop varieties that are capable of adapting to different weather conditions is expected to reduce the cost associated with fertilizers and pesticides used for controlling pests and weeds.
