We’re going to explain why PID Controllers are used in industrial processes. We’ll illustrate how Controller settings affect different processes under control. We’ll also provide an overview of Controller Tuning. Let’s start with a discussion about home temperature control. If the room temperature is below the setpoint, the furnace is turned ON. When the room temperature increases above the setpoint, the furnace turns OFF. This type of control is referred to as ON/OFF or Bang-Bang Control. The temperature is not exactly held at the setpoint of 70°F, but cycles above and below the setpoint. ON/OFF control may be ok for your house, but it is not ok for industrial processes or motion control. Let’s look at an example of tank level control to explain why. The Valve fills the tank as the pump drains it. If the valve is operated with ON/OFF control, the water will fluctuate around the 50% setpoint. For our purpose, let’s say the fluctuation is ±10%. In most industrial applications, this fluctuation around the setpoint is not acceptable. What if it’s possible to throttle the valve and place it in any position between ON and OFF? Let’s look at how a PID Controller fits into a feedback control loop. The Controller is responsible for ensuring that the Process remains as close to the desired value as possible regardless of various disruptions. The controller compares the Transmitter Process Variable (PV) signal, and the Setpoint. Let’s refer to the difference between the Process Variable and the Setpoint as the Error signal. Based on that comparison, the controller produces an output signal to operate the Final Control Element. This PID Controller output is capable of operating the Final Control Element over its entire 100% range. The PID controller determines how much and how quickly correction is applied by using varying amounts of Proportional, Integral, and Derivative action. Each block contributes a unique signal that is added together to create the controller output signal. - The proportional block creates an output signal proportional to the magnitude of the Error Signal. Unfortunately, the closer you get to the setpoint, the less it pushes. Eventually, the process just runs continuously close to the setpoint, but not quite there. - The integral block creates an output proportional to the duration and magnitude of the Error Signal. The longer the error and the greater the amount, the larger the integral output. As long as an Error exists, Integral action will continue. - The derivative block creates an output signal proportional to the rate of change of the error signal. The faster the error changes, the larger the derivative output. Derivative control looks ahead to see what the error will be in the future and contributes to the controller output accordingly. That brings us to a term called Controller Tuning. There are many different manual methods for tuning a controller that involves observing the process response after inflicting controller setpoint changes. One method involves increasing the amount of setpoint change and repeating the procedure until the process enters a state of steady-state oscillation. Most process controllers, PLC, and DCS loop controllers sold today have Autotuning capability. Spiking Neuronal Networks (SNNs) realized in neuromorphic hardware lead to low-power and low-latency neuronal computing architectures. Neuromorphic computing systems are most efficient when all of perception, decision making, and motor control are seamlessly integrated into a single neuronal architecture that can be realized on the neuromorphic hardware. Many neuronal network architectures address the perception tasks, while work on neuronal motor controllers is scarce. Here, we present an improved implementation of a neuromorphic PID controller. The controller was realized on Intel's neuromorphic research chip Loihi, and its performance tested on a drone, constrained to rotate on a single axis. The SNN controller is built using neuronal populations, in which a single spike carries information about sensed and control signals. Neuronal arrays perform computation on such sparse representations to calculate the proportional, derivative, and integral terms. The SNN PID controller is compared to a PID controller, implemented in software, and achieves a comparable performance, paving the way to a fully neuromorphic system in which perception, planning, and control are realized in an on-chip SNN.

He is a senior researcher and lecturer. His research interests include autonomous management of distributed systems with a focus on edge-based IoT. He often works on context data management, semantic modeling, and service management. His focus is on interoperability, portability, usability, and security. Ein maßgeschneidertes und selbst entwickeltes Tool für das Reporting? Klingt aufwendig, aber Timo Radzik hat diesen Aufbau bei Siemens umgesetzt. Er spricht darüber mit Jonas Rashedi, Host des Podcasts MY DATA IS BETTER THAN YOURS, der genau nachfragt, warum und wie dieses Reporting umgesetzt wurde. In den meisten Unternehmen wird ein Data Hub aufgebaut, an das dann Visualisierungstools wie Tableau oder Power BI geschlossen werden. Bei Siemens allerdings gibt es Analytics Unlocked, eine komplette Eigenentwicklung, an der bis zu 15 Entwickler:innen beteiligt waren und wofür Timo die Rolle des Product Owners übernimmt. Für Timo ist das Tool eine große Erleichterung, welches die Möglichkeit eröffnet, alle Mitarbeiter:innen so durch das Tool zu leiten, dass sie genau die Zugänge und Daten erhalten, die sie brauchen. Das Tool ist sogar so individualisiert, dass die entsprechenden Rollen Notifications darüber erhalten, wenn für sie nötige Daten ankommen. Die Entwicklung eines Tools dieser Art ist nur möglich, wenn eine gewisse Größe an Unternehmen vorhanden ist, das sagt Timo ganz klar. Aber auch Vorsicht ist geboten: In den vielen Möglichkeiten kann man sich schnell verlieren. Das Wichtigste für Timo und gleichzeitig der größte Fail ist es, genug mit den Menschen zu reden, welche die Daten nutzen. Ein kurzer Kaffee-Talk und die Frage nach den Anforderungen helfen ihm, die richtigen Dashboards zu erstellen. Außerdem gibt er den Tipp, früh ein Konzept ins Testing zu geben, um nicht in die falsche Richtung zu entwickeln. Abstract Cybersecurity is gaining more and more attention over the last years. In this talk we will briefly motivate and discuss important steps that companies need to take to address this topic. Our talk will address the product security lifecycle based on the OWASP Software Assurance Maturity Level. Towards the end of our talk we will shift our focus to secure coding as an important milestone of software development. We will also briefly introduce CyberSecurity Challenges – a new serious game to raise awareness of secure coding for software developers in the industry. This game has been developed at Siemens in partnership with academia, and will be offered as an hands-on event. About Tiago Gasiba Tiago Gasiba has been awarded the Engineering degree in Telecommunications, Electronics, and Computers from Oporto University in 2002. In 2004 he completed his Master of Science in Communications Engineering at the Technical University of Munich. He is currently finalizing his PhD (Dr.rer.nat) at the Universität der Bundeswehr München. Tiago Gasiba has published more than thirty papers on the topics of channel coding and serious games for Cybersecurity in international scientific conferences. He holds several patents in the field of cyber security, and he has more than twenty years of experience in the industry. Tiago Gasiba has been invited as a guest lecturer at the University of Passau, Iscte in Portugal, and UniBW in Germany. In his current role, Tiago Gasiba works as a security trainer and is responsible for several workshops on security awareness and secure software development, as part of his role on secure software enablement at Siemens. About Santiago Suppan Santiago Suppan was awarded the grade of Master of Science in business informatics with honors by the University of Regensburg and the Bavarian Elite Network in 2012. In 2018, he finished his doctorate studies (Dr. rer. pol.) within the University of Regensburg and after being granted a doctorate scholarship by Siemens AG Corporate Technology, where he accompanied several funded research projects and researched security in industrial systems, the smart grid, privacy by design and privacy-enhancing technologies in the area of the Internet of Things (focus area), holding academic publications and industry patents. Today, he advises, trains, and coaches business units worldwide as a security consultant and as an engagement manager at Siemens AG.
