Such computers used to be referred to as PC clones, or IBM clones. They duplicate almost exactly all the significant features of the PC architecture, facilitated by IBM's choice of commodity hardware components and various manufacturers' ability to reverse engineer the BIOS firmware using a "clean room design" technique. Columbia Data Products built the first clone of the IBM personal computer by a clean room implementation of its BIOS.Early IBM PC compatibles used the same computer bus as the original PC and AT models. The IBM AT compatible bus was later named the Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) bus by manufacturers of compatible computers. The term "IBM PC compatible" is now a historical description only, since IBM has ended its personal computer sales. Descendants of the IBM PC compatibles comprise the majority of personal computers on the market presently with the dominant operating system being Microsoft Windows, although interoperability with the bus structure and peripherals of the original PC architecture may be limited or non-existent. Some computers ran MS-DOS but had enough hardware differences that IBM compatible software could not be used; examples include slight differences in the memory map, serial ports or video hardware. Only the Macintosh kept significant market share without compatibility with the IBM PC.

How Is IBM Even Still Around?
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
I’m sure you’ve all heard about IBM. They’re one of the pioneers of the PC industry, but nowadays, virtually no one uses IBM computers. Yet, IBM is still one of the largest companies in the world with a market cap of over $100 billion, so how does IBM even make money? Well, throughout IBM’s history, they were almost always a B2B company as opposed to a consumer brand. This is quite ironic given that they’re most well known for their PCs in the 1980s, but this was actually the exception for IBM, not the norm. After the dot-com bubble burst, IBM sold off its PC division to Lenovo and they started focusing on their B2B business once again. This consisted of producing server racks, networks, databases, and setting up cloud infrastructure. All of these background functions allowed IBM to rise to prominence once again, but with the rise of competition within these markets, IBM is struggling once again. Their revenues have nearly halved within the past 10 years and it’s not clear if they can compete against the juggernauts like Amazon and Microsoft. This video explains the rise, fall, rise again, and fall again of IBM. (IBM-PC DOS) Round 42 - Elven Software / Mike Pooler 1986 - COMPLETE AFTER ~ 42 years!
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
Throwback Thursday way back to 1986! Say hi to CGA! Update! I finally beat this game. So glad to finally close this chapter of my life. Complete after ~40 years. Back when computers were very limited in color, and pixels are huge, my brothers I often play Round 42. 42 rounds of pixelated alien invaderesque fun! On our IBM PC-XT, with 4 color CGA monitor, most of the games are 4 colors: Black White, and either ugly red and green, or cyan and white. Somehow, this game got all of these colors! The game was hard, and the final enemy of each round moves ridiculously fast. Then we found that F2 fires the zapper weapon :P

IBM 5153 CGA Monitor Simple Recap
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
A "spurt" sound isn't something you ever want to hear from your monitor... I knew I wasn't going to get away with leaving it shifting between blue and red for long, but I didn't think it would be this short. If I had seen the cap on the connector board for the CRT initially then I wouldn't have had to take the whole thing apart. But I kind of wanted to get an overview of what was going on inside anyway so I don't mind the extra work having been put in. But if yours blows a color cap you can easily avoid the most difficult part of removing the tube. I'm happy with how this turned out. I will be getting better capacitors later for it, but it isn't a rush. I think I made all the colors a bit dim on the adjustment on the back of the tube. That's probably why it seemed so much darker afterwards. Really, I should have done the calibrations at about 75% brightness. Oh well, it's not too difficult to get to that so I can always fix it later. Digital öppen gästföreläsning om AI med Patrick Couch, IBM
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
Välkommen att delta på en öppen gästföreläsning om AI: "Language, Thinking and the Alchemy of Learning Machines: An introduction to the possibilities & challenges with Artificial Intelligence" med Patrick Couch , Business Developer focused on Artificial Intelligence & Cognitive Technologies IBM. "Today, we live in a world which is in many regards digital first. Even seemingly non-digital events and phenomena such as the Corona pandemic, the US election and the democracy movement in Hong Kong are defined, understood and judged digitally first and only in an analog way secondly. Data and algorithms have come to inhabit a central place in our world and we now very much live in a world determined by the successes and failures of our technologies to understand us humans. Our social media feeds, our news feeds, our financial credibility, our entertainment, our shopping, our dating are all facilitated by data crunching algorithms doing their best to please. Obviously, this makes for great possibilities but also poses significant challenges. In this digitally defined world stands the developer, who like an alchemist conjures up new digital vistas for the rest of us to enter into, revel in and be challenged by. In the light of this, I will introduce the topic of artificial intelligence and the need to adress it intelligently."

IBM Portable PC (Model 5155): Part 1
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
I was never aware of this computer "back in the day" ... I remember the IBM Convertible PC coming out with it's neat pop-up twin 3.5" floppy drives, but hadn't realised about this earlier Portable Personal Computer. It uses an earlier version of the IBM PC/XT (Model 5160) motherboard ... oh, and yes, the keyboard uses an RJ11 connector and not RJ45, duh. Got this sometime in 2018 for quite a good price - picked it up in Sydney so no shipping charges either - bonus! Ironically, it was "around the corner" from where we used to live (for ten years) before leaving Sydney for Port. From my earlier research, it appears to have an AST "SixPackPlus" memory expansion and serial I/O card, a standard CGA card, a hard drive plus an unknown card. I originally upgraded the BIOS to the latest available but then got stuck trying to get a CF drive and/or FlashFloppy drive to work. I may have also installed an NEC V20 and/or 8087 math co-processor. Maybe. Now that I've got it out again, first thing is to check what's lurking in the power supply before doing anything else. IBM Portable PC (Model 5155): Part 4 - It lives!
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
Got the power supply back together, re-installed the cards I needed: CGA with composite out, AST SixPakPlus memory expansion, floppy controller and XT-IDE (rev. 4 from Glitchworks). Left the HDD controller out. And ... it worked! Well, it POSTs a "601" error which I assume is because there's no floppy drives connected. I was surprised ... managed to get to GW-BASIC via the XT-IDE ROM boot. After some jumper fiddling, I managed to boot off the CF card. I'm using a 1GB Compact Flash card ("Dick Smith Electronics" branded!) that I know worked on my Amstrad PC1640 (using a Lo-Tech XT-IDE card). So it booted into MS-DOS 6.22 and was working fine. I loaded up my favourite game of all time ... The Ancient Art of War. Man, I played that game for hours ... along with The Ancient Art of War at Sea ... even managed to recover some campaigns I created on 5.25" floppies from back in the 90s (with references to now-ex-girlfriends, for some reason). Next - try to get the floppy drives working. Not really necessary as I can just load stuff onto the CF card, and even re-use the original HDD front panel & activity LED for the CF card ... let's see. Glitchworks XT-IDE Rev. 4 - mine's got "Slot 8" support and I'm using v1.1.5 of the XT-IDE BIOS (XUB): http://www.glitchwrks.com/2017/11/23/xt-ide-rev4 XT-IDE Rev. 4 summary: http://www.minuszerodegrees.net/xtide/rev_4/XT-IDE%20Rev%204%20-%20general.htm XT-IDE BIOS (XUB) versions: http://www.minuszerodegrees.net/xtide/XUB/XUB.htm

An off-the-cuff video of what I encountered an hour before the regular recording time - It just fell together from there. I look at the aspect of what I initially believed may be three bad drives - they are old and expected to fail. But what, let's see what we can swap out - I was glad to have another controller right at hand. Comparing the IBM Z back ends in GCC and LLVM - GNU Tools Cauldron 2018
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
Presented by Ulrich Weigand at GNU Tools Cauldron 2018 GCC and LLVM perform similar tasks, but the internal implementation is very different. As a maintainer of the IBM Z back end in both GCC and LLVM I've had the opportunity to become familiar with both worlds. In this talk, I'll give an overview of the current status of support for IBM Z processors in both GCC and LLVM, touching on differences in available feature sets and performance results. In addition, I'll be talking about my experience working in the context of both compiler frameworks. Where did I find GCC easier to work with, and where does LLVM have its advantages? The talk will look at these questions from a back-end perspective.

(IBM-PC) Sorcerian - Scenario 1-5: The Tower of Thieves『盗賊たちの塔』 - ソーサリアン (Falcom & Sierra)
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
THE TOWER OF THIEVES A foul wind is blowing in the kingdom of Pentawa. It blows through towns and villages with gales of blood and tempests of destruction. It calls itself 'The Blue Wind'. 'The Blue Wind' is a group of ruthless thieves who are casting a shadow of fear over the countryside. They have taken over the ruins of an old castle abandoned long ago under mysterious circumstances; its strange, forboding atmosphere seems somehow fitting to their purposes. A man, wounded in battle and nearly dead from hunger and thirst, has wandered into Pentawa looking for assistance. He tells of a narrow escape from the castle, and of a beautiful princess and many brave warriors held captive there. He also speaks of a vile demon and a dragon imprisoned for ages who may soon be free again. The king has issued an order for all Sorcerian adventurers worthy of the name to respond to this man's plea for help. 'Go forth in the name of your ancestors and rid the land of this evil that calls itself 'The Blue Wind'. GOAL An outlaw band is using a deserted castle as a base from which to raid nearby villages. They have captured the princess of a neighboring country and her company of fighters, who came to the castle on business of their own. There may be a dragon imprisoned under the castle. Infiltrate the Tower of Thieves, and rescue the princess and her warriors from this band of robbers, who may be more powerful than they seem. ITEMS VASE: Located on the altar in the chapel of the deserted castle. PASS: Several outlaws carry passes signed by Garok that allow them to go restricted places in the castle. GARATEEN: A holy sword in a silver scabbard. The blade is silver carved with sacred runes. RED BALL & BLUE BALL: These objects have something to do with opening some of the doors in the castle. PENDANT: A gold necklace with a large gemstone hanging from it. It possesses a strong protective magic. MONSTERS GAR: A ferocious fish that inhabits the lake under the castle. It has sharp teeth and powerful jaws. MAJOR DEMON: A shapechanging demon that likes to take human form. Cruel and very deadly. SHADOW DRAGON: The dragon has been imprisoned in a dark narrow cave for many years. Its wings have degenerated so that it can no longer fly, but its ability to breathe fire has not been diminished.

(IBM-PC) Sorcerian - Scenario 2-5: The Cursed Ship『呪われたクィーンマリー号』- ソーサリアン (Falcom & Sierra)
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
THE CURSED SHIP From the ship's log of the Maria Regina: 17th day, month of Dagonn. Fine. A good west wind. Good progress. Toward sunset, the cabin boy found Jacob's body in the forward hold. His throat had been cut. There were no witnesses. I can think of no-one who might want to kill Jacob -- he was well-liked among the crew. He had been ill the last few days, but it seems unlikely that he committed suicide. 24th day, month of Dagonn. Rain. I am afraid for my son. I don't like the idea of his being here on the ship, now that I'm certain that someone aboard is a murderer. I've tried to warn him to be cautious, but he wouldn't listen. Maybe my timing was bad; his pet macaw just disappeared. We will be putting in at Pentawa soon, and I want him to stay with his mother. Tensions are running high on the ship. The sailors are beginning to whisper that we are cursed. 3rd day, month of Hydra. Calm. When we dropped anchor in Pentawa Harbor, some people came on board asking for passage. They are adventurers, it seems, off to right some wrong somewhere. They treat it like some kind of sport. I offered them free passage in exchange for convincing my son to stay ashore when we leave. They may find this task harder than battling dragons. GOAL The ship Maria Regina is anchored in Pentawa Harbor. One of the sialors has been brutally murdered, and the rest of the crew is anxious and uneasy. The Captain's son refuses to go ashore to the safety of his mother's house. If the captain's dilemmas can be solved, he might be willing to give you passage aboard the Maria Regina to exotic ports where adventure abounds. ITEMS HATCH KEY: A key of simple design, it unlocks one of the ship's cargo holds. GOLD JAR: On its surface is engraved in ancient letters, "the one that is hard to let go." BLOOD STAINED AXE: No murder weapon has yet been found. Could this be it? AUGER: A common shipboard tool, used to make holes in barrels. MACAW: The captain's son's beloved pet. It was startled by a ship's rat and flew away. The boy is very upset. CABIN KEY: Key to unlock one of the sailor's private cabins. DESK KEY: This key opens a drawer in a desk somewhere on the ship. MONSTERS RAT: The rats aboard the ship have become very aggressive lately. GHOST: Spirits who seek out the living to rob them of life energy. SEAGULL: The seagulls are beginning to exhibit strange behavior, including attacking people. OWL: These owls, like the other animals around here, have begun to attack people. OAKROT: At first glance, this monster resembles the oak trees from which it evolved. (Note: Oakrot is not actually in any version of the game!) ARCHDEMON: This demon takes the form of a huge devil-face. Burning rays shoot forth from its mouth.

The Adventures of Willy Beamish - Dynamix/Sierra On-Line, 1991 - IBM/PC (4K)
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
A playthrough of Dynamix's third adventure title, The Adventures of Willy Beamish published by Dynamix/Sierra On-Line in 1991. Like Rise of the Dragon and Heart of China, Willy Beamish used the Dynamix Game Development System, which allowed programmers, artists, and writers to work simultaneously on the project within the same environment. It was the last adventure title to be directed by co-founder Jeff Tunnell before he left the company to form Jeff Tunnell Productions, most notable for creating The Incredible Machine series. A sequel, The Further Adventures of Willy Beamish, was rumored but never materialized. Ringworld: Revenge of the Patriarch - Tsunami Media, Inc., 1992 - IBM/PC (4K)
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
A playthrough of the first Ringworld title, published by Tsunami in 1992. Tsunami was formed in 1991 by Edmond Heinbockel, former chief financial officer of Sierra On-Line. The company's first adventure title, Ringworld: Revenge of the Patriarch, was based on Larry Niven's Ringworld novel series. Ringworld was received with mediocre reviews at best and declared the 14th-worst computer game ever released by Computer Gaming World, nonetheless the title managed to spawn a sequel in 1994. If anybody can help me with model numbers that would be suitable for this project, that would be useful :o) 2) With the tape drive, I've also been informed that you can use generic tape drives of the era to talk to this kind of set up and don't specifically need an IBM system, can you advise me on this as I am a complete novice. 3) With the hard drive, I believe I need about 1.2gb of storage. Can I use 9332's in this set up (I've been told they may be troublesome), or do I need another kind of storage solution (please advise). 4) And now for the largest problem.....the OS. I know that I will need os/400 for this, but is there a way to get a copy without sourcing from ibm (not a rich guy so no way I can afford it from them). I've also been told that I would need a copy specific to my hardware configuration. Is this true, and is there any way around this? 5) Ok, the other thing is, does anybody know of anywhere I can get the hardware for this without paying premium prices? If anybody knows, it would be a LOT of help :o) I hope you've enjoyed my video and any help you can give me with any of the points above, or any other thing you can think of will be very much appreciated :o)

Heart of China - Dynamix/Sierra On-Line, 1991 - IBM/PC (4K)
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
A playthrough of Dynamix's second adventure title, Heart of China published by Dynamix/Sierra On-Line in 1991. Heart of China, inspired by big-screen adventures like Raiders of the Lost Ark and High Road to China, was developed using the Dynamix Game Development System, the same framework used in Rise of the Dragon released a year prior. The artwork used a mixture of digitized photos of live actors and hand-painted backgrounds. With a tight production budget, Dynamix had to recruit the cast of actors from the company's own employees and their families. The game's fantastic atmospheric settings, employing great color palettes and beautiful hand-drawn backgrounds looked amazing at the time and still do. The narrative while a bit on the cheesy and stereotypical side still makes for a great adventure. Mainframe operating system IBM MVS 3 8 on Windows for beginners M44
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
Donation: http://bit.ly/2FXei0Q Microsoft Windows Microsoft Windows is a group of several graphical operating system families, all of which are developed, marketed, and sold by Microsoft. Each family caters to a certain sector of the computing industry. Active Windows families include Windows NT and Windows Embedded; these may encompass subfamilies, e.g. Windows Embedded Compact (Windows CE) or Windows Server. Defunct Windows families include Windows 9x, Windows Mobile and Windows Phone. Microsoft introduced an operating environment named Windows on November 20, 1985, as a graphical operating system shell for MS-DOS in response to the growing interest in graphical user interfaces (GUIs).[3] Microsoft Windows came to dominate the world's personal computer (PC) market with over 90% market share, overtaking Mac OS, which had been introduced in 1984. Apple came to see Windows as an unfair encroachment on their innovation in GUI development as implemented on products such as the Lisa and Macintosh (eventually settled in court in Microsoft's favor in 1993). On PCs, Windows is still the most popular operating system. However, in 2014, Microsoft admitted losing the majority of the overall operating system market to Android,[4] because of the massive growth in sales of Android smartphones. In 2014, the number of Windows devices sold was less than 25% that of Android devices sold. This comparison however may not be fully relevant, as the two operating systems traditionally target different platforms. Still, numbers for server use of Windows (that are comparable to competitors) show one third market share, similar to that for end user use. As of October 2018, the most recent version of Windows for PCs, tablets, smartphones and embedded devices is Windows 10. The most recent versions for server computers is Windows Server 2019. A specialized version of Windows runs on the Xbox One video game console. Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy Industrial engineering is an inter-disciplinary profession that is concerned with the optimization of complex processes, systems, or organizations by developing, improving and implementing integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information, equipment, energy and materials[1]. Industrial engineers use specialized knowledge and skills in business administration, management, mathematics, physical sciences, social sciences and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict, and evaluate the results obtained from systems or processes[1]. From these results, they are able to create new systems, processes or situations for the useful coordination of man, materials and machines and improve the quality and productivity of systems, physical or social[2][3]. Depending on the sub-specialties involved, industrial engineering may also overlap with, operations research, systems engineering, manufacturing engineering, production engineering, management science, management engineering, financial engineering, ergonomics or human factors engineering, safety engineering, or others, depending on the viewpoint or motives of the user. Even though its underlying concepts overlap considerably with certain business-oriented disciplines, such as operations management, Industrial engineering is a longstanding engineering discipline subject to (and eligible for) professional engineering licensure in most jurisdictions

Ed Walsh, IBM | CUBE Conversation February 2020
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
theCUBE host Dave Vellante (@Dvellante) is joined by Ed Walsh from IBM for a CUBEConversation from our Boston studios #theCUBE #CUBEConversation https://siliconangle.com/2020/02/12/ibm-simplifies-storage-new-flashsystem-family/ IBM aims to simplify storage with new FlashSystem family IBM Corp. is trying to eliminate some of the complexity of data storage with a new family of flash storage products it introduced today to meet the needs of a large array of enterprises, including entry-level, midrange and high-end systems that extend to hybrid and multicloud environments. The new IBM FlashSystem is a family of products meant to address the varying storage requirements of organizations ranging from startups to large-scale enterprises. As the company explains, different businesses have different needs for their storage, with things such as performance, scalability, data services, functionality and high availability just some of the considerations. Traditionally storage vendors have solved this the easy way, simply by providing a massive range of different storage products for different purposes. That’s all well and good, but as the number of storage platforms an organization uses rises, so does the level of complexity they need to deal with. Complexity is never a good thing when it comes to information technology. In the case of storage, it means using different management systems for each storage platform, different ways to troubleshoot problems, different application programming interfaces in order to interact with those systems, different paths to the cloud and many other headaches. Add to that, most enterprises use several systems from multiple providers, adding to the headaches they need to deal with. The complexity means that organizations often have to delay the deployment of new storage technologies, while it also limits their flexibility and drives up costs. In an exclusive interview with Wikibon analyst Dave Vellante on SiliconANGLE’s mobile livestreaming studio theCUBE, Ed Walsh, IBM’s general manager of Storage and Software Defined Infrastructure, said the storage landscape has evolved into the complicated mess it is today because in the past, there was really no other way of doing things. “There’s always been a difference between high-end solution sets and low-end solution sets,” Walsh said. “Everything was based upon the features people needed, for example right availability, the right price points, features, functions, availability. It made sense that you had to have a unique thing. But because of the innovation we’ve driven, you no longer have to do that.” Perhaps the single-most important innovation with the new IBM FlashSystem family is that each system runs the same software stack. IBM Spectrum Virtualize provides the same “enterprise class data services” for entry-level all the way up to its high-end systems, while also enabling “nondisruptive data movement” and cloud and container deployments with supported storage, the company said. FlashSystem also provides consistent APIs for automating the provisioning and management of storage, supporting approaches including bare metal, virtualized, containerized and hybrid/multicloud workloads. “Our platforms are now one: It’s going to be one software and one API to manage,” Walsh said. “We’re going to do simplification without compromise we’re gonna give you what you need. You’re going to need an entry level packaging, midrange and high-end, but it’s going to be one software allows you to meet every single price requirement and functionality.” The new storage family comprises the IBM FlashSystem 9200, a high-end system for the most demanding of enterprise storage requirements; IBM FlashSystem 9200R, which is for customers that need a system that’s fully assembled, installed and configured by IBM’s engineers; IBM FlashSystem 7200, which provides hybrid and multi-cloud functionality for midrange enterprise deployments; and a number of entry-level offerings, including FlashSystem 5010, 5030 and 5100. IBM further promises “six nines” availability across all price points, with two- and three- site replication, cross-site high-availability configurations and the option for guaranteed 100% data availability. FlashSystem is managed in the cloud with IBM Storage Insights, which provides artificial intelligence-based analytics for insights into best practice recommendations plus 24/7 access to support when it’s needed. AI also powers the IBM EasyTier capability that helps to make sure the right data is placed in the right tier at the right time. With it, the “hottest” or most-used blocks of data move up the tiers as necessary when they’re more frequently accessed, while “cooler” blocks of data move down. ...

Getting an IBM XT 5160 with 10MB HDD
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
I just picked up this IBM 5160 the other day and I'm really excited to try and get it going! I am stunned the HDD is still working in this computer! Who knows when it was last powered on, if the head was parked, or how roughly it's been treated. I'll probably make this computer my dual monitor system once I move a color card into it since its 8 ISA slots make it easier to waste one on a weird setup like that. I'm definitely leaving the original HDD in there though and am going to use it. It's just to cool to pull and replace with an XT-IDE. IBM NetVista 6274-18U All In One Pentium 4 PC
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
A belated look at an early Socket 478 all in one computer made by IBM. It has a 1.8 GHz CPU that almost certainly belongs to the Willamette family of Pentium 4 silicon. While it might sound completely stupid or fantastic to consider contacting a TV show production company in search of computer parts, there are some production companies that have auctioned off old props. I was, after all, slightly desperate to find a power supply. Luckily, a power supply showed up on eBay for a price that I was willing to pay! The rest, as they say, is history...

MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
Remembering the old operating system IBM OS / 2 Warp Server of "Big Blue". IBM probably with this brand new system tried again to conquer the general public, however, although OS/2 failed in the consumer market it triumphed in sectors that already dominated. Thanks to the robustness and the reliability demonstrated este OS is still used today in 2020 and since the early 90s in many ATMs and in large institutions such as the New York City Subway.

MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
OS/2 Warp 3 Installed on the IBM PC 340 I got an Ensoniq Audio PCI card and a USB adapter card installed in the IBM Personal Computer 340. After that, I install OS/2 Warp 3 Connect. It took a bit longer than I anticipated, so I will have to do other installments of the video series showing off OS/2 Warp in more detail and applying fixpacks and drivers. Have fun.

1995 IBM System/390 Mainframe Magazine promo film Restored (computer history operating system, MVS)
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
PLEASE JOIN US in Preserving Computer History with a small contribution to our channel. https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=LCNS584PPN28E Your contribution greatly helps us continue to bring you educational, historical, vintage computing topics. Thank you! ~ Computer History Archives Project The following is a restored VHS promotional film from IBM's "System/390 Magazine" for 1995. Features IBM OS/390 mainframe operating system updates, IBM at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Nissan Auto R&D in Michigan, Dresdner Bank in Germany and Spain, and the IBM 3494 Tape Library at SmithMeter Company. Excellent color and sound, Un-edited version, runs about 35 minutes. The IBM System/390 was announced in 1990 as the most current upgrade to the System/360 and System/370 family. Available in various sizes, the lowest cost models under $100,000, and the highest water-cooled giant systems in the $20 million dollar range. The Operating System "OS/390" was introduced in late 1995 to help fully utilize the MVS operating system package. An additional benefit of the OS/390 packaging concept was to improve reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) for the operating system. This "packaging" reduced the overall time required for customers to test and deploy the operating system in their environments. Film also mentions IBM's plans in the area of Enterprise Client-Server architectures. In December 2001 IBM extended OS/390 to include support for 64-bit zSeries processors and added various other improvements, and the resulting OS was named z/OS. IBM ended support for the older OS/390-branded versions in 2004. This film is part of the IBM "System/390 Magazine" series of news and updates from IBM. Provided as educational and historical information only. Courtesy of IBM Archives. Restoration by Computer History Archives Project Additional "System/390 Magazine" volumes to be published this week. * *

Summer Bloom at the Tower of London
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
As the evenings draw in, and our European teammates start to hunker down for the winter, we nostalgically look back to brighter, warmer times over the summer when we visited the Tower of London Super Bloom exhibition. This historic moat was transformed into a new naturalistic landscape and perfectly aligned to CyrusOne’s commitment to habitat at our data centers. Designed to attract pollinators, the Super Bloom renovation also linked to our work with ‘DC’s for Bees’ and it was great to see biodiversity taking center stage in central London. CyrusOne Connects: The Digital Skills Gap: Growing the Talent Pool
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
The data center industry is experiencing a critical skills shortage and if it doesn’t evolve in time, it is only set to get worse. As the recent Uptime Institute statistics suggest, half of existing engineering staff will retire by 2025, yet the number of staff needed to run the world’s data centers will grow from around 2 million to nearly 2.3 million by 2025, we need to act now. In episode three we are delighted to welcome Andrew Stevens, President and CEO, CNet Training and Steve Hayward, Senior Director, European Operations at CyrusOne, to the podcast. Guided by our Host, Matthew Pullen, EVP & MD Europe at CyrusOne we discuss the challenges of maintaining current workforces whilst growing the talent pool for the future. Our guests also share new approaches and fresh perspectives that organizations within the data center industry struggling to attract talent can adopt to combat this ongoing skills shortage. We hope you enjoy this thought-provoking discussion with actionable advice, and thank you for listening. We’d love to hear your thoughts, so please don’t forget to like, share, comment and subscribe. CyrusOne Connects: The Sustainability Imperative: Will Fusion Power Save the Data Center
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
Like many corporations worldwide, CyrusOne is committed to procure 100% green energy worldwide by 2030 as part of its pledge to become carbon neutral. There are many elements that encompass a corporation's’ sustainability strategy which requires ongoing investment, flexibility and commitment. In episode two we are thrilled to introduce Dr. David Kingham, a trained theoretical physicist and Executive Vice Chairman at Tokamak Energy, along with Tom Kingham, Director of Solutions Engineering at CyrusOne, to the podcast. Guided by our Host, Matthew Pullen, EVP & MD Europe at CyrusOne, we explore how Tokamak Energy is leading the race against time to replace worldwide reliance on fossil fuels by developing technology capable of recreating the energy that powers the sun, and in doing so create the world’s ultimate sustainable source of energy – FUSION. We seek to demystify the science and explain what needs to happen to make fusion energy a globally available and secure resource for the world’s energy needs. With Tom, we go on to discuss and relate the impact and importance of fusion for the data center industry and what it needs to do to ensure widespread adoption and answer the ultimate question, ‘Is fusion the only true sustainable energy solution for the data center industry?’ We hope you enjoy this inspiring discussion with our guests today and thank you for listening.
