MY SILO

DESCRIPTION:

Deterministic Networking for Real-Time Systems (Using TSN) - Henrik Austad, Cisco Systems Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) and Deterministic Networking (DetNet) has its origin in Audio-Video Bridging's (AVB) IEEE standards. This makes it possible to architect a distributed system that almost eliminates the uncertainty of network traffic jitter. In turn, this will allow a real-time system to scale beyond a single unit as it can express requirements to the network itself and trust that traffic will not be dropped or delayed over a certain limit. Since this is a set of open standards, and even more hardware is being made TSN-capable every day, one can use off-the-shelf solutions to build robust systems. This talk will cover what AVB/TSN is, where DetNet is going and how this all fits well with the Linux kernel and the open source model. The main part is the current kernel TSN development, where we are, where we are going and what others are looking at TSN to solve. About Henrik Austad Henrik received his Master's in Engineering Cybernetics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. Since then, he has worked as a web front- and back-end developer, architecting internal systems for malware analysis. Currently doing Linux kernel real-time performance profiling and tuning, low-level audio development and lately, driving the TSN development effort at Cisco Lysaker.

Choosing optimal hyperparameters can drastically improve the performance of a model, but the search space grows exponentially with the addition of new hyperparameters. A closely related subfield of automated machine learning is neural architecture search (NAS). In recent research, networks generated by NAS algorithms can even outperform handcrafted neural networks. However, like hyperparameter tuning, the process can be time-consuming and expensive. We present Katib - a Kubernetes-native automated machine learning platform for hyperparameter tuning and NAS. Part of the Kubeflow platform, Katib offers a rich set of management APIs in the form of custom resources. We will demonstrate how to configure and run an experiment and compare performance in Katib’s UI dashboard. https://sched.co/NrnY

Gitopsify Cellular Architecture - Ayush Ghosh & Sergey Sergeev, Cisco Systems, Inc. Building and managing data-intensive microservices applications have their challenges. Cellular architecture & Gitops together help create an independently deployable, manageable, and observable solution. We moved from running multiple expensive non-prod inconsistent environments to testing in production. Weave Flux, Istio, and Crossplane helped us build multi-cloud, multi-cluster declarative environments in minutes. With the new deployment model and custom tooling, devs can get a miniaturized version of the SaaS running on their laptops. The devs can pick and choose which components and versions they want to run locally. The CI/CD metrics have improved dramatically as the integration & E2E tests run against real apps and not mocks. The system spins up real cloud-native solutions for production deployments and falls back to containerized workloads for non-production. Adding support for new regions has come down to days of work from months.

DESCRIPTION:

We were facing the following challenge while using C* built-in replication mechanism for our use case to replicate data between our company (HQ) and contract manufacturing (CM) sites all over the world: Sophisticated table-level replication mechanism: 1. Both CM1 and CM2 data need to be replicated to HQ. 2. CM1 data can't be replicated to CM2 due to intellectual property concerns. 3. Both CM1 and CM2 share the same table schemas within the same keyspace as HQ for consolidated real-time analysis in HQ. 4. Selected data in HQ need to be replicated to both CM1 and CM2. We developed our own data-propagation application to solve the challenge. The application leveraged C*' own distributed data model for real-time, load-balancing, high-throughput and high-availability propagation. The session will cover the use case, the challenges, and the data-propagation application in details. We'll share our throughput metrics and the lessons we have learned through the journey. The Approximate Filter, Join, and GroupBy - David Rodriguez (Cisco Systems)

MY SILO

DESCRIPTION:

Flink Forward Berlin, September 2017 #flinkforward David Rodriguez, Security Researcher at Cisco Systems In this talk we introduce the notion of approximate filter, join, and groupby operations for arrays. Typically, Flink streams contain primitive types and tuples where filter, join, and groupby operate on exact matches. But, exact matches are sometimes limiting. For example, the objects Array(100, 0, 100) and Array(100, 0, 101) may be “close enough” to match. To solve this problem, we introduce locality sensitive hashing (LSH) for arrays of numeric and string types. This technique encodes arrays into strings so that similar arrays are encoded to the same string. In other words, we ensure matching when arrays are similar, up to a degree of error. Therefore, it is easy to incorporate new approximate filter, join, and groupby design patterns built on the notion of exact matches. In conclusion, we highlight how Cisco Umbrella streams large signals stored in arrays and then clusters them using approximate filter, join, groupby methods to detect waves of botnets and cybercrime online. https://www.slideshare.net/FlinkForward/flink-forward-berlin-2017-david-rodriguez-the-approximate-filter-join-and-groupby https://data-artisans.com/

The 33-year-old multinational giant, however, is infusing Viptela with more than the $610-million check it plunked down for it, according to Manan Shah (pictured), director of product management at Cisco Systems. The companies are filling in blanks in each other’s portfolios and rounding out their business models. “Cisco as a company is moving towards a subscription-based business model,” Shah said. “And Viptela was all about subscription business model. So that was very attractive to Cisco.” Shah spoke with Stu Miniman (@stu) and John Walls (@JohnWalls21), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the AWS re:Invent conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. (* Disclosure below.) What’s legacy is new again While Cisco has green-lighted Viptela to keep innovating at the pace of a startup, the latter is pulling new customers thanks to Cisco’s corporate clout. As an indie startup, Viptela sometimes met with doubts from companies uncertain about its rep. The trusted Cisco brand has significantly increased its sales pipeline. Viptela is also stitching capabilities from Cisco’s portfolio into its software-defined wide area network fabric. “If you look at Viptela, it was all Ethernet-based products,” Shah said. It could not offer customers digital subscriber line technologies or T1/E1 interfaces, for instance. These and other offerings in Cisco’s portfolio are now wide open to Viptela, just as Viptela’s SD-WAN network solutions are available for Cisco to bake into products. “It naturally made sense to leverage all of the breadth of portfolio that Cisco has and build that into the fabric,” Shah said. “In the next few months, we will have a new software which will leverage all of those capabilities and has a full breadth of portfolio connected into that SD-WAN fabric.” Watch the complete video interview below, and be sure to check out more of SiliconANGLE’s and theCUBE’s coverage of AWS re:Invent. DESCRIPTION:

Cisco SSTG is interested in reducing the time to market of its software. During 2010 they did an internal analysis and identified 14 constrain in their product development processes; one of those related to the outsourcing partnership process. The major concerns with the current outsourcing organizations is a feeling of low productivity mainly due to lack of coordination, culture misalignment, poor communication and collaboration (ex: time zone, organization, different languages between Cisco and his partners). As a result of those issues, it's common for partners to complain on not having enough info of the product they have to produce. On the other hand, Cisco's managers spent a lot of time (up to 40% of their time) interacting with partners and explaining requirements. Through this project, we will use the Enterprise Architecting framework to make an analysis of Cisco SSTG and develop a proposal for a better outsourcing governance structure. http://rafamara.com

Joining us on the upcoming episode of G-Lounge is Ben Chung, who is on the Board of Directors of Cisco Systems, the world's leading networking technology company, and serves as the Manager of the Cisco Innovation Center in Songdo, the Republic of Korea. In 2009, Cisco and Incheon Metropolitan City government signed a Memorandum of Understanding on establishing an innovation center in the Songdo International Business District. The Cisco Innovation Center was opened soon after, and it has been in the forefront of "digital innovation" in Korea ever since. Our guest shares with us his knowledge of the Internet of Things (IoT), which he describes as a network of "things" such as devices and systems with sensors that can communicate and exchange data and information with one another via Internet connection. We will also get to learn about the application cases and solutions such as the lost child finder and the smart factory solution. That's not all! We will get to delve into the topic of "digital transformation" or "digitization" which Cisco will be pursuing in 2016. Ben Chung says that "digitization" involves connecting devices, information and humans to achieve efficiency and better results. He also stresses that "digitization" is a broader concept compared to IoT.
