At the 2010 Oxford Medtronic lecture, over 120 academics, students and representatives from industry and government came to the Richard Doll Centre in Headington, Oxford, to hear Professor Mark Prausnitz, PhD talk about "biophysical methods of drug delivery". Professor Prausnitz is Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Centre for Drug Design, Development and Delivery at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Professor Prausnitz delivered an eloquent lecture illustrating the use of biomedical engineering techniques to enhance intracellular and transdermal drug delivery. In particular, he demonstrated the use of ultrasound to increase cell membrane permeability reversibly, and the exploitation of localised heating, abrasion and micro-needle technologies for improved transdermal drug and vaccine delivery. The Regional Vice President of Medtronic for UK & Ireland, Mr Geoff Morris, OBE, highlighted the UK’s strong scientific base which provides an effective and successful platform for clinical research. He said: "Committing to the future of scientific research through graduate scholarships is crucial if the UK is going to make a significant contribution to global scientific research and the management of chronic disease."

Chitrang Dave, Director Data & Analytics, Medtronic Abstract: What is data and AI’s role in the healthcare ecosystem? In this session, I will explore this question through four distinctive use cases from a life sciences perspective with real world examples. Clinical path for CRRT NICU adoption: modality, technology and barriers

Professor James Duncan from Yale University, USA, gave the fourth Oxford Medtronic Lecture, on Thursday, 9th June. His lecture titled, "Model-Based Strategies for Biomedical Image Analysis," focused on problem areas and visual examples of the brain structure and heart function. Professor Duncan’s lecture highlighted image analysis strategies, mathematical techniques and a presentation of results obtained when analysing actual patient image data relating to the heart and brain. Professor James S Duncan PhD, Ebenezer K. Hunt Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Professor of Diagnostic Radiology and Electrical Engineering, said: “The development of methods to accurately and reproducibly recover useful quantitative information from biomedical images is often hampered by uncertainties in handling the data related to: image acquisition parameters, the variability of normal biological, anatomical and physiological structure and function, the presence of disease or other abnormal conditions, and a variety of other factors.”

Mr. William Hawkins, chairman and CEO of Medtronic - the world's leading medical Device company , paid an extensive visit to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, israel Mr. Hawkins, accompanied by senior company representatives from Europe and Israel, began the visit in a meeting with Rambam's senior management. Rambam CEO, Prof. Rafi Beyar revealed Rambam's development plans, the ongoing construction of an advanced medical discovery tower and the variety of advanced medical research projects taking place at the hospital, particularly in the fields of imaging, stroke treatment, trauma and embryonic stem cell research. Mr. Hawkins was very interested to hear about the hospital's ability to conduct its own research and the extent to which the government of Israel allows the development of independent research at the hospital. Afterwards, the visitors toured the stem cells laboratory where Prof. Lior gebstein, from rambam and the technion, is working on applied research using stem cells, to repair damage to the heart muscle. Medtronic beats Q3 estimates and raises full-year guidance February 19, 2019 Medtronic plc (MDT) topped consensus estimates on revenue and earnings for the third quarter of 2019 and raised its earnings guidance for fiscal year 2019. Shares were up 0.79% in premarket hours on Tuesday. Worldwide revenues totaled $7.5 billion, up 2.4% from the same period last year. On an organic basis, revenues grew 4.4%. Medtronic CEO Omar Ishceorak talks with Jim Cramer of "Mad Money" about product developments and his legacy after heading the medical device company for nearly a decade. Medtronic’s acquisition of Israeli robotic surgical equipment maker Mazor Robotics is in the early innings of success, CEO Omar Ishrak told CNBC on Tuesday. “It’s only beginning to pay off,” he said in a sit-down with Jim Cramer of “Mad Money” at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco. “We’re delighted with the results that we’re seeing and our spine business this last year — ever since I’ve been here — has had its strongest year, and the robot has played a big role in that.” Medtronic, the medical equipment company based in Ireland, paid out $1.64 billion in late 2018 for Mazor Robotics, which builds spine and brain surgical guidance systems for minimally invasive procedures. Medtronic bought out remaining interest in the firm after a 2016 partnership gave it an 11% share in Mazor. Medtronic’s spine division is within its Restorative Therapies Group, which includes brain, specialty and pain therapies. Revenue in the spine business improved 5.5% to $692 million in the quarter that ended in October. Medtronic also attributed growth in its brain therapies segment to robotics. Ishrak, who is retiring as Medtronic chief in April, said the robotic-assisted guidance systems are being used in “most major centers” in the United States, but he did not go into details. At the health-care conference in San Francisco, Medtronic said it expects its minimally invasive therapies operations to grow by as much as 150 basis points in the 2022 fiscal year and by as much as 250 basis points by the 2023 fiscal year with the help of its robotic-assisted surgery platform. The minimally invasive business is projected to reach $10.3 billion by the end of the 2023 fiscal year, up from about $8.5 billion last year, according to FactSet. “The desire for that is pretty high, but most importantly what it does is it makes the procedures consistent” and “we’re integrating it with other technologies, such as our navigation system and eventually our imaging system,” Ishrak explained in the interview. “There’s a spinal robot, we’re also working on a general surgery robot, there’s a cranial robot [and] there will be others.” Medtronic has focused on making acquisitions to shore up its minimally invasive and robotic surgery device business. The goal is to stave off growing competition in the cardiac and vascular space, where the company deals in stents and heart pumps. When Ishrak retires at the end of the current fiscal year on April 27, he will retain his seat as chairman of the board and add the title of executive chairman of Medtronic. Since he took the helm of chief in June 2011, Medtronic stock has risen nearly 208% to date, from about $38 a share to $117.04 as of Tuesday’s close. The company mandates that its executives retire at age 65. Ishrak told Cramer his legacy is defined by the patient base of 75 million people served the prior fiscal year and the team that he worked with. “When I started, the [patient] number was more like 20 million a year. So just watching that and the impact that has had on people is a huge thing, and I think the company’s positioned to extend that further,” he said. He set off for a career designing medical devices for Medtronics and moved upwards steadily. In less than ten years, Barry moved into leadership roles with added responsibilities and has actively led the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers during transition periods on more than one occasion. His drive is motivated by a desire to do good things for others. His work at Medtronic focuses on providing a better life for people with diabetes and he has an emphatic approach to improving the bottom line. Not only for profit but to offer better products. Additionally, he takes an active role in motivating young Latinos to pursue STEM careers and education.
