“The pill” that Darwin never saw coming: the impact of hormonal contraceptives on brain health Cyclic changes in estrogens and progesterone in mammalian species evolved over thousands of years and eventually developed into what we now refer to as the menstrual cycle. In the 1950s something occurred that natural selection had never anticipated: wide scale distribution of hormonal contraceptives. Today, over 100 million women use hormonal contraceptives, and this number is rapidly growing. Despite this, research on hormonal contraceptives and the brain has only recently emerged. Recent findings have found structural and functional changes in neuroimaging studies of hormonal contraceptive users as well as altered neuroplasticity in animal studies. Most strikingly, studies have reported altered cognitive function and increased depression, anxiety, binge-eating, insomnia, stress, and suicidality among hormonal contraceptive users. From an evolutionary perspective, control over one’s reproductive hormones is a brand-new phenomenon for humans. It’s essential that we consider these drugs in light of evolution in order to understand what unintended consequences they may have.

On February 16, 2021, the Sex and Gender in Health and Disease (SGHD) Scientific Interest Group hosted a virtual talk, “Sexual acceptability’s role in contraceptive choices and behavior, featuring guest speaker, Jenny A. Higgins, Ph.D., M.P.H., Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Although contraception is designed to be used during sex, few large, longitudinal studies examine contraceptive methods’ effects on sexual functioning, satisfaction, and well-being over time. In this presentation, Dr. Jenny Higgins will present findings from a study of sexual outcomes among 3,500 contraceptive clients who initiated one of six short- or long-acting methods (combined oral contraceptives, levonorgestrel IUDs, copper IUDs, implants, injectables, and vaginal rings). Dr. Higgins will make suggestions for future efforts to understand and promote the sex-enhancing aspects of contraceptive methods, as well as how to best match clients with methods that will work for them sexually. During 1–2 December 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) convened a technical consultation to review new evidence on the risk of HIV acquisition with use of hormonal contraception.1 The issue was recognized as critical, particularly for Sub Saharan Africa, where women have a high lifetime risk of acquiring HIV, hormonal contraceptives constitute a significant component of the contraceptive method mix, and unintended pregnancy is a common threat to the well-being and lives of girls and women. A Guideline Development Group (GDG) of FP and HIV experts, representatives from affected populations, clinicians, epidemiologists, researchers, programme managers, policy-makers, and methodologists arrived through consensus, at new recommendations for progestogen-only injectables On February 28, WHO convened a pair of webinars to update key stakeholders of these changes in the MEC recommendations prior to the launch of the interim guidelines during the first week of March 2017 These webinars (one for UN staff and the other for donors and key bilateral partners) provided an opportunity for stakeholders to provide feedback on the key documents (including FAQs) developed in support of the launch of the interim guidelines.

Population Services International (PSI) joined with the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and the Camber Collective for a webinar to explore why infrequent sex is a major driver behind women not choosing contraception and the segments of women and girls who are underserved by options currently in market.

Islamabad : The government has allocated Rs1,000 million to the Pakistan Population Fund for expansion and improved coverage of family planning services. Moreover, a PC-I (2021-26) with an estimated cost of Rs2,000 million has been approved for implementation of the National Action Plan for Family Planning in ICT and the federating units. The target is to improve the Contraceptive Prevalence Rate from 34% (2017) to 50% in 2025 and 60% in 2030. The above data were shared with participants of a national seminar organized by the Ministry of National Health Services in connection with ‘Population Week,’ which is being observed from July 11-17 to commemorate ‘World Population Day.’ Pakistan is the world’s 5th most populous country, with a population of over 220 million. It has the highest population growth rate (2.4%) among regional countries, which means an addition of over 3 million people every year. Officials from various government ministries and departments, representatives of the UN agencies, INGOs, NGOs, partner organizations, and health and population professionals attended the seminar, which had Special Adviser to the Prime Minister on Health Dr. Faisal Sultan as guest speaker. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Faisal Sultan expressed concern over Pakistan’s explosive population growth burdening its limited resources such as water, energy, and environment, in addition to affecting the health and well-being of mothers and children. “The government has prioritized the population agenda and is committed to promoting family planning to bring a balance between population growth and local resources,” he stated. Dr. Faisal emphasized the need to focus on education, especially girls’ education, and general health services and well-being of the population, alongside specific measures to address the unmet need for family planning. “The government will place all required resources to implement this holistic, multi-pronged approach,” he said. Dr. Syed Atta-ur-Rehman, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Health, called for reaching out to couples, families, and communities with an innovative approach. Dr. Shabnum Sarfraz presented the salient features of the Population Situation Analysis. The Joint Director of the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics Dr. Dur-e-Nayab shared the impact of population explosion on environment and resources. Representatives of UNFPA and the World Health Organization reiterated their commitment to support Pakistan in improving its population indicators and achieving its international commitments (Sustainable Development Goals, FP 2030 and ICPD 35) The Chairman of the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) Dr. Qibla Ayaz highlighted the role of ulema in propagating the National Population Narrative (Tawazun). He shared that the national narrative of Pakistan on population states, “Parents have the right to freely and responsibly decide the number and spacing of their children to fulfill the fundamental rights of their children and family by maintaining a balance between their family size and resources. The government and society have the responsibility to facilitate parents to achieve this balance by providing universal access to family planning information and services, thereby achieving sustainable development.” He said the CII has developed recommendations to address minor-age marriages and is determined to bring ‘Minber and Mehrab’ on board for the agenda of family planning and reproductive health. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said Friday he expects to receive 130,000 doses of Pfizer's vaccine by Christmas if the FDA authorizes emergency use for it. The pharmaceutical company says it's filing an application to that end on Friday. Department of Health Commissioner Judy Persichilli said paid and unpaid people serving in healthcare settings who have greater potential for direct or indirect exposure to infection would get first priority as far as the vaccine. Shai Ben David (University of Waterloo) On the statistical validity of the Covid-19 vaccine trial results of Pfizer and Moderna Recorded December 17, 2020 Abstract: Pfizer and Moderna have publicized the results of their trials with their Covid-19 vaccine. What can be reliably inferred from their experimental data? The talk is primarily geared towards machine learning and statistics students with a double aim: 1) To clarify the statistical significance of those recently published results, and 2) To demonstrate the use and relevance of some basic tools of the trade of statistics I will show how elementary probability analysis can be applied to evaluate the statistical validity of conclusions about the efficacy of these vaccines. The talk is of explanatory-educational nature and claims no research novelty. Bio: Shai Ben-David earned his PhD in mathematics from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and has been a professor of computer science at the Technion (Israel Institute of Technology). Over the years, he has held visiting faculty positions at the Australian National University, Cornell University, ETH Zurich, TTI Chicago and the Simons Institute at Berkeley. Since 2004 Shai is a professor at the David Cheriton school of computer science at University of Waterloo. He has also been an area chair and senior program committee member for the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) and the Neural Information Processing Systems Conference (NIPS).
