Designing wireless sensor networks that can provide meaningful services in every-day life applications requires the ability to continuously monitor humans and understand what they do over space and time. However, monitoring humans is a very complex task that might involve a set of heterogeneous sensors ranging from simple motion or RFID sensors to more complex camera sensors. Typical low-power microprocessors cannot be used to concurrently acquire, process and communicate the information produced from all of these sensing modalities. As a result, a shift from low-power to power-aware sensor node platform design is needed, where the required application processing and communication capabilities must become available at the minimum possible power overhead. In this design paradigm more capable processors or even multiple heterogeneous processors and/or radios might be used. Networked embedded systems with heterogeneous processors and/or radios extend the energy/timing trade-off flexibility and provide the opportunity to fine tune resource utilization. In this talk, I will present specific power-aware design techniques that can be employed to achieve energy-efficient task scheduling strategies and show how several design bottlenecks and tradeoffs can be exploited to improve the performance and accuracy of these strategies. These design techniques, bottlenecks and tradeoffs will be presented in the context of two different prototype power-aware platforms I have designed and implemented, the XYZ sensor node and the mPlatform architecture.

Impala: A Middleware System for Managing Autonomic, Mobile, Wireless Sensor Networks Sensor networks are computer systems with many sensing/compute nodes working to gather information about their environment, process and fuse that information, and in some cases, actuate control mechanisms in response. Sensor networks operate under severe energy constraints that call for very lightweight software layers. On the other hand, sensor networks are long-running systems, intended to operate in situ, with minimal direct human intervention, for months or years. This requires support for adaptive operations and ease of upgrades over the life of the system. In response to these opposing needs, this work has investigated middleware layers for sensor network systems. In particular, in this talk I will discuss Impala, a middleware layer developed for ZebraNet. ZebraNet is a mobile, wireless sensor network aimed at improving tracking technology via energy-efficient tracking nodes and store-and-forward communication techniques. Impala acts as a lightweight operating system, but also has been designed to encourage application simplicity, modularity, adaptivity, and reparability. Impala provides an interface for on-the-fly application adaptation in order to improve application performance, energy-efficiency, and robustness. Impala allows application updates to be received via the node's wireless transceiver and to be applied to the running system dynamically. Impala adopts an operation scheduling mechanism and an event handling model to capture the regular and irregular aspects of system activities. Impala unifies media access control and transport control into an efficient network protocol that supports a broad taxonomy of sensor network communication styles. In the context of Impala implementation on ZebraNet hardware nodes, I discuss how system constraints and goals led to the layering and interface designs in the system architecture. Overall, the contributions of this work include: 1. Established a system architecture with minimal layering and clean interfaces. The entire system consumes 16KB code memory and 320B data memory. 2. Implemented efficient regular operation scheduling and irregular event handling. The typical overhead is at 100's cycles. 3. Developed a unified network protocol to provide a broad range of message models. Packet header overhead is about 10 and update strategy saves software transmissions by 85. 5. Provided quantitative basis for justifying the needs for a special middleware layer in building efficient sensor network systems.

Science and technology are widely acknowledged as crucial tools for promoting and bolstering the nation's economic and social development. Over the years, India has made substantial advancements in numerous spheres of S&T. The Indian government has long acknowledged that advances in S&T are essential for improving industrial and agricultural production, improving the quality of goods and services, and raising income levels and society's well-being. We live in a time of growing prosperity. But this is occurring alongside increasing inequalities. People are, on average, living longer and healthier lives, receiving more education and having better access to clean water, sanitation and electricity. A new middle class has emerged, fuelled by rapid growth amid the emerging economy. At the same time, poverty is stubbornly persistent in some pockets. Crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic have laid the gaps bare for all to see. Since the first industrial revolution, gaps between richer and poorer countries have widened with every spurt of progress. Our current technological surge could therefore have severe implications for developing countries. Science and technology capabilities are essential for the social and economic advancement of the nation. Science and technological advancement can benefit rural communities by opening up new livelihood opportunities and diversifying their sources of revenue. New technologies can drastically improve the way people live and work. S&T can also raise the standard of living for rural residents and make it easier for them to access services. The necessity of harnessing science and technology to transform rural India has long been acknowledged. As a result, the Government of India launched several programmes to use science and technology to promote community prosperity and the overall growth of rural areas. The Techneev@75 programme highlights the impact of STI intervention in empowering communities, whether tribal, rural, or urban. The programme aims to display the STI capacity at the fundamental level of society and quantify the extent to which STI has permeated various communities and social structures over 75 years of India's independence. It also gauges the aspirations and expectations of the communities, in addition to mulling upon prospects and what needs to be done to make these interventions scalable and sustainable. The programme also emphasised identifying grassroots innovations, enhancing them, increasing their effectiveness, and disseminating them to a large population to ensure that the impact of such innovations is reflected in better livelihood prospects. Technologies that decreased laborious tasks, saved time and energy, and increased production efficiency were identified, adapted, and promoted, inspiring the community's members to pursue entrepreneurship and launch businesses. A load-balancing guiding scheme is designed and an analytical model is derived to reduce the total evacuation time of people indoors. The guiding scheme can provide the fastest path for people to reach an exit according to the evacuation time estimated using the analytical model. Based on thorough research, this is the first distributed solution in which corridor capacity and length, exit capacity, and the concurrent movement and distribution of people are considered in estimating the evacuation time and planning escape paths. Using the proposed framework, congestion in corridors and at exits can be eased to substantially reduce the total evacuation time. Analytical and simulation results show that this approach outperforms existing schemes and can prevent people from following local optimal guiding directions that increase the evacuation time. Locally Exploiting Wireless Sensors Travis Goodspeed Engineer of Superior Buckles, Goodspeed and Gourneau Wireless sensors are often built with a microcontroller and a radio chip, connected only by a SPI bus. The radio, not the MCU, is responsible for symmetrical cryptography of each packet. When the key is loaded, it is sent as cleartext over the SPI bus, and an attacker with local access can steal the key using a few syringe probes and readily available hardware. This attack and other local attacks against wireless sensor networks will be presented in detail, including a live demo of an AES128 key being extracted from an operational network. Following the conclusion of the lecture, audience members will be brought onstage to perform the attack themselves on various pieces of example hardware. Travis Goodspeed is a neighborly reverse engineer from Southern Appalachia. He has been exploiting and reverse engineering wireless sensors since writing the first stack overflow exploit for them in 2007. His recent projects have included a timing attack on the MSP430 bootstrap loader and an extra-neighborly party-mode belt buckle in the shape of Tennessee. RFID technology provides a foundation, an enabling technology towards the realization of ‘zero-power’ wireless sensors and implementing the Internet-of-Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine (M2M) communication. Interest in RFID technology is further enhanced by its fundamental capability for wireless powering of devices, allowing for battery-less operation. The presentation begins with an overview of ambient energy availability and energy harvesting technology challenges for low power circuits and sensors. Design challenges and novel technologies and materials, such as paper, textiles, and inkjet/3D printing are highlighted. Special focus is placed on electromagnetic energy transfer and harvesting for range maximization of passive RFID systems. Rectenna design and optimization under different operating conditions and in different operating frequencies from HF to millimeter waves is addressed. Multiple technology harvesters leading to the development of energy harvesting assisted RFIDs are discussed. Low profile and conformal solar antennas and solar–electromagnetic harvesters including examples implemented on paper and textile substrates are presented. The integration of an antenna with a thermo-electric generator is demonstrated. Waveform optimization in wireless power transfer is addressed, and the ability to improve the RF-DC power conversion efficiency of electromagnetic energy harvesting devices by tailoring the characteristics of the transmitted signals is discussed. The last part of the talk presents application examples including wireless sensors powered from solar and electromagnetic energy harvesting, millimeter wave back-scattering, solar energy harvesting for RFID tags and sensors based on ambient backscattering.

Ubiquitous sensor networks would allow two-way communication, real-time remote monitoring, and rapid response to changing conditions. Consider the difference between landline telephones and smart phones to imagine how wireless sensing networks might transform infrastructure, energy, and manufacturing. However, current wireless sensor nodes are expensive to maintain as batteries die and need to be replaced, and the nodes are often very difficult to install. Energy harvesting has the potential to resolve these issues and enable a stick-on, set it and forget it type of node. This talk will highlight the different types of energy harvesting research going on in our group, giving a brief overview of how each technology works and when it might be used. I will then focus in on piezoelectric vibration energy harvesting, which is the subject of my research. I will discuss experimental results of a MEMS harvester tested on machinery, optimization of the harvester, and integration of the energy harvester with energy storage. Finally, I will present a novel resonator design that is able to passively self-tune its frequency to match the input vibration.

Professor: Benton Calhoun Electrical and Computer Engineering Department University of Virginia Abstract: The next generation Internet of Things (IoT) envisions trillions of miniature devices that essentially disappear into the environment and objects around us, to improve our lives by measuring information from our world and routing it to stake-holders or connected devices that take action for our benefit. The only and inevitable solution to enable this vision is self powered, batteryless sensor nodes that harvest energy from their environment. This talk frames key tradeoffs and considerations for self powered system design and describes several generations of circuit components and systems-on-chip that have enabled self powered system operation. Results from multiple generations of self powered sensing nodes demonstrate full systems with active power consumption at 20 µW, 6 µW, and 500 nW. These power levels enable reliable self powered operation across a huge breadth of deployment conditions. We also describe commercialized self powered systems deployed by Everactive, a venture-backed startup that has industrial IoT solutions in the market. Together, these results provide a capability for designing microwatt or nanowatt level wireless nodes to enable robust self powered system deployments.

Abstract: The evolution of communication technologies over the past 140 years has enabled ubiquitous connectivity with billions of sensors globally. However, today’s technologies still face fundamental obstacles, which prevent them from seamlessly extending to complex domains like the ocean, the human body, or supply chain environments. In this talk, I will describe new technologies developed by my group that allow us to bring the Internet-of-Things (IoT) to extreme environments. First, I will describe a new generation of underwater sensor networks that can sense, compute, and communicate without requiring any batteries; our devices enable real-time and ultra-long-term monitoring of ocean vitals (temperature, pressure, coral reefs) with important applications to scientific exploration, underwater climate monitoring, and defense. Next, I will talk about new wireless technologies for sensing the human body, both from inside the body (via micro-implants) as well as from a distance (contactless), paving the way for novel diagnostic and treatment methods. Finally, I will describe new RFID based micro-logistics solutions that can bring extreme visibility to supply chain processes, with applications to retail, warehousing, and manufacturing; these technologies also allow us to extend robotic perception beyond line-of-sight, enabling robots to perform complex manipulation tasks that were not possible before. The talk will cover how we have designed and built these technologies, and how we work with medical doctors, climatologists, oceanographers, and industry practitioners to deploy them in the real world. I will also highlight the open problems and opportunities for these technologies, and how researchers and engineers can build on our opensource tools to help drive them to their full potential in addressing global challenges in climate, health, and automation. Speaker Bio: Fadel Adib is the Doherty Chair of Ocean Utilization at MIT and Associate Professor in the Media Lab and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He is also the founding director of the Signal Kinetics group which researches wireless and sensor technologies for health, computing, and climate. Adib was named by Technology Review as one of the world’s top 35 innovators under 35 and by Forbes as 30 under 30, and his research was recognized as one of the 50 ways MIT has transformed Computer Science. Adib’s commercialized technologies have been used to monitor thousands of patients with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and COVID19, and he has had the honor to demo his work to President Obama at the White House. Adib is also the recipient of various awards including the NSF CAREER Award (2019), the ONR Young Investigator Award (2019), the ONR Early Career Grant (2020), the Google Faculty Research Award (2017) and the Sloan Research Fellowship (2021), and his research has received Best Paper/Demo Awards at SIGCOMM, MobiCom, and CHI. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are distributed collection of small sensor nodes that gather security-sensitive data and control security-critical operations in a wide range of industrial, home and business applications. The current developments in the sensor technology and ever increasing applications of WSNs point to a future where the reliability of these networks will be at the core of the society's well-being, and any disruption in their services will be more costly than ever. There is thus a fundamental question as to how one can design wireless sensor networks that are both secure and reliable. In this talk, we will present our approach that addresses this problem by considering WSNs that employ a randomized key predistribution scheme and deriving conditions to ensure the k-connectivity of the resulting network. Random key predistribution schemes are widely accepted solutions for securing WSN communications and the k-connectivity property ensures that the network is reliable in the sense that its connectivity will be preserved despite the failure of any k − 1 sensors or links. Throughout, we will consider two classical key predistribution schemes, namely the Eschenauer-Gligor scheme and the pairwise scheme of Chan, Perrig, and Song. Our approach is based on the analysis of random graph models naturally induced under these schemes, and developing conditions on the network parameters (e.g., number of nodes, density of nodes in the deployed area, link failure probability, number of keys per node, key pool size), which will ensure that the resulting networks are k-connected with very high probability. The main focus of the talk will be on the latest results concerning the k-connectivity of secure WSNs under an ON-OFF communication channel model. Possible extensions to the disk communication model will also be discussed.

This paper presents the simulation of distributed wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consisting of autonomous mobile nodes that communicate, with or without a central/root node, as desired for edge artificial intelligence (edge-AI). We harness the high-resolution and multidimensional sensing characteristics of IEEE 802.15.4 standard and Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) to implement dynamic, asynchronous, event-driven, targeted communication in distributed WSNs. We choose Contiki-NG/Cooja to simulate two WSNs, one with and the other without a root node. The simulations are assessed on the network Quality of Service (QoS) parameters such as throughput, network lifetime, power consumption, and packet delivery ratio. The simulation outputs show that the sensor nodes at the edge communicate successfully with the specific targets responding to particular events in an autonomous and asynchronous manner. The performance is slightly degraded when using the RPL WSN with a root node. This work shows how to simulate and evaluate distributed WSNs using the Cooja simulator which would be useful for designing such networks for edge-AI applications, such as visual surveillance, monitoring in assisted living facilities, intelligent transportation with connected vehicles, automated factory floors, immersive social media experience, and so on.
